Melanie was one of our first students. When Melanie wrote her Personal Development Plan it became apparent that she did not have a computer at home. We also noted that she and her mother shared an interest in sewing and they made clothes for the family. In her second year at high school we presented Melanie with a laptop and printer. The presentation was made in senior assembly in front of 700 of her peers and there was a collective gasp as they learned she was able to keep her new technology. I know Melanie was pleased because she hugged her laptop for the rest of assembly. In her third year the Board decided to gift Melanie a new sewing machine as we had learnt the family machine was old and prone to break down. We gave Melanie a choice of machines and bought her the one she selected. We were also able to give her some material and a substantial amount of sewing equipment and cottons. Melanie learnt that if she paid her student loan early she would obtain a 10% discount, so she is used her scholarship money to pay down her student loan.
Melanie has graduated with a BSc and is currently doing medical research.
