Linwood High School 2008
Canterbury University 2009 – 2011
We awarded Tony his scholarship in his final year at Linwood High School. Tony went on the University of Canterbury and studied for a Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in Economics and Finance. Trying to complete his subjects during an earthquake, which destroyed many facilities on the university campus, was a real challenge but one which Tony overcame really well. The Winding Road Trust was able to help by paying for his books and his soccer club fees. We also took him shopping to buy some basic clothing. One of Tony’s dreams was to become an exchange student. The University of Canterbury awarded him a scholarship for a semester at Purdu University in the United States. The scholarship paid for his board and university fees but he had to find his own way there and pay any other expenses. We were able to pay Tony’s return airfare and give him $NZ500 to help with living expenses. When Tony returned from America the Trust found a businessman who was willing to be his mentor. We wrote references for Tony and his mentor was able to give Tony some help in developing his resume for job interviews.
Tony obtained a position with Downer in Christchurch; a significant opportunity as Downer will now support Tony to further his studies through their own scholarship scheme.
